Introduction

We've all heard the cries of 'Harry Potter is a rip off of Star Wars!' or 'Avatar is a rip off of Pocahontas!' This is usually followed by a stripped-down-to-the-basics rundown of both plotlines followed by a triumphant "See! They're literally the exact same thing!'

Ignoring the fact that these commenters tend to not know the meaning of the word 'literally', there is one very key difference in the stories mentioned: the way the world is built.

This class is going to look at the different aspects of world building and how to take even the most generic of storylines and tuck it inside of a place with its own mechanics and magic (even if not literal magic) that sets it apart into a new world of its very own.

Please keep in mind that this is a writing class, so you will be expected to write! In fact, you will get the most out of this class if you jot down answers to the myriad of questions that will be asked in each lesson (though this will be only for your personal use and not graded), as each one will contribute to the world you are building. All assignments have the same due date, which will be advised shortly.
